Hey,
I'd like to put an end to Platt's nonsense once and for all...

PLATT:
Those on the side of science in this war are ably represented by
Steven Weinberg, a Nobel laureate. In his latest book, "Facing Up:
Science and Its Cultural Adversaries," Weinberg says the laws of
physics are objectively real and "have no legitimate implications
whatever for culture or politics or philosophy."

Pirsig would agree....

RICK:
Not only would Pirsig NOT agree... but he has already done so quite
clearly.

Pirsig EXPLICITLY disavows any notions of an 'absolute truth'...
"Unlike SOM the MOQ does not insist on a single exclusive truth (LILA
p114)."

He also EXPLICITLY states that truth is grounded in SOCIETY...
"The intellectual level of patterns... has tended to invent a myth of
independence from the social level for its own benefit. Science and reason,
this myth goes, come only from the objective world, never the social world.
The world of objects imposes itself upon the mind with no social mediation
whatsoever. It is easy to see the historic reasons for this myth of
independence. Science might never have survived without it. But a close
examination shows it isn't so (LILA p179)."

Got that Platt? Pirsig says the notion that science and reason are
independent of society and only come from the objective world is a myth! A
MYTH!!! Nobody minds if you express your own opinions, but please don't try
to pretend they're Pirsig's thoughts... They are EXPLICITLY not.
