Hi All:
Those familiar with the academic scene know there is a war going on
between traditional scientists and postmodern intellectual elites over
whether an electron is real or merely a social construction. At stake is
who gets to define truth and reality.
Those on the side of science in this war are ably represented by
Steven Weinberg, a Nobel laureate. In his latest book, "Facing Up:
Science and Its Cultural Adversaries," Weinberg says the laws of
physics are objectively real and "have no legitimate implications
whatever for culture or politics or philosophy."
Pirsig would agree. SOM has no business trying to govern society. "It is
this intellectual pattern of amoral 'objectivity' that is to blame for the
social deterioration of America." (Chap. 24)
That postmodern multiculturists offer no viable alternative is evident
from the self-contradiction inherent in their claim that truth, being a
social construction, is relative--except for THEIR truth. Their worldview
reverts power back to the Victorian-style social level, except God is
replaced by the holiness of Equality. (A marvelous exposure and
indictment of postmodernist views can be found in the first chapter of
Ken Wilber's book, "Sex, Ecology, Spirituality.")
