Hi David,

It's not so much the attacks themselves as the response to them as played
out in this forum. In particular it has forced me to sharpen my
understanding of what it is that I do and do not like about US culture, and
the relative importance of those things. I still pretty much agree with what
I said in my 'four theses' (Mon Sep 17 2001) but I no longer consider what I
said sufficient. In particular, I think US culture is both more open to DQ
than the English equivalent and also, at root - even if not in its every
incarnation - I think it is based on superior (fourth level) values. So in
other words, whereas previously I had tendencies towards less
government/strong rule of law/specific rights etc, now I have much more
conviction. (I've started to read some different things as well, eg Thomas
Sowell's 'The Vision of the Anointed' - Platt and Rog would enjoy that I
think, if they're not already familiar with it).

I daydream about emigrating to the US (if I end up pursuing an academic
career, it will almost certainly be in the US).

Has anyone else here read 'The Fourth Turning' by Strauss and Howe? My
pro-US sympathies aren't stopping me seeing that it is presently going down
a very dark road, and that book put flesh on some intuitions. In particular,
Bush's 'axis of evil' speech was playing into the mutual escalation that
they describe.

One last point, about the science thread - anyone else here following the
furore caused by Bjorn Lomborg's book on environmentalism? Seems like the
scientific culture is just as open to abuse as any other....

Sam
