Rod,

YOU WROTE
I really thought that by joining this group, I would be able to discuss
ideas that arose within me from reading ZMM and Lila.

RICK
You were right. You can discuss those things at anytime. Many members
express these kinds of thoughts in essay form on website and many of them
are
quite good (whether you agree with the author or not). I've been a member
of this for 5 years and I am only now hard at work writing my first essay
for the forum.

ROD
But it seems the majority of the discussions are critiques of what Pirsig
said or intended to say!!

RICK
For better of for worse this effect is inevitable because of the simple
fact that the forum revolves around Pirsig's work. To discuss the MOQ we
need to have a common understanding of what we're discussing. Disagreement
over the basics makes it difficult to agree on extensions.

ROD
Getting bogged down in the details of these books is like discussing the
individual bricks which make up a great building- you miss seeing the
building as it was meant to be seen, as a whole.

RICK
It has been said both that 'God is in the details' and that 'the Devil is in
the details'. As Pirsig advises us, "Narrow it down to the front of one
building on the main street of Bozeman. The Opera House. Start with the
upper left-hand brink (ZMM p171)."

ROD
I would really love to hear some " original " thoughts - something fresh

RICK
Actually Rod, people offer original ideas around here all of the time
(Soloqi, game theory, the marketplace of ideas, schemas, etc, etc, etc) and
the essays in the forum. I think if you looked closer you would find
originality in many of the thoughts that turn up around here. You may not
agree with those original thoughts... but discussing why we disagree is
often more valuable than discussing why we agree.

it's all good,
rick
