I just wanted to add to what I said a little more before you comment.
Why I wanted to change each individual spot as a washer because instead of
moving holes I thought that each spot had the potential to be on or off (star
twinkling or a hole). So each washer has the "potential" of being a star or a
hole. I may be picturing your model wrongly but when I picture your
description of the I Ching yarrow sticks before they hit the ground the event
is all the sticks and spaces are in movement but another possible model is
that the sticks are NOT moving they are just appearing and disappearing.
Why I am bothering to do this is one of the things I liked in Lila was when
Pirsig said there was a third state of a computer besides "1" and "0" it was
when it was shut off (which I interpretated as the potential of 1 and O.)So
instead of the vision of stars and holes moving I like the idea that each spot
has the potential to be either-- so the washer has both the 1 and O potential.

Interesting model.. I have a few questions.. You used an analogy of a washer
for the levels and colored lights making up the washer (your x's) right?.
What if instead of moving holes each X is a washer. I am thinking of an
analogy of a neural net model where a unit is on or off just like the stars
twinkling or disappearing. So the hole is if the washer is "off" and the
circle part is if the washer is "on"
I don't know a lot about neural nets but one thing that differs from your
model is all the levels would use the same nodes (lights) and what changes is
the pattern connecting the nodes (weights I think) and whether the nodes are
on or off. So in analogy with your model with X being a star twinkling and O
if the star was "off".
