R:
I agree with what you have written that the path to social progress will be
different based upon the context of other biological and social and
intellectual patterns. History and context affects the possible paths one
can take.
WIM:
It will be a path which combines:
- a relatively better share of 'fame and fortune' for internal
relative losers to more effectively lure them away from opting
out and becoming external entities,
- a relatively worse share of 'fame and fortune' losses for
external entities in external win/lose or lose/lose interactions
to more effectively lure them into opting in and becoming
internal entities,
- more motivation for relative losers to emulate the relative
winners and
- more motivation for relative winners to stay ahead.
R:
Status is important in a social context. An effective social pattern will
use status and countless other rewards to encourage behavior that contributes
toward total progress and discourage behavior that undermines this. If
individuals believe they can never compete fairly, they will tend to opt out.
This applies both to losers and winners (winners will opt out if their
efforts/contributions/qualities are never recognized.)
W:
On further consideration I don't think the stability of an intellectual
pattern of values correlates positively only with the size of its
indisputable core. The degree of 'indisputability' should also be taken into
account. A small indisputable core with near-tabu status may make an
intellectual pattern of values more stable than a large one that -however
difficult- can be disputed.
R:
I don't follow where this paragraph is going at all. Let's drop it if not
critical. I think you are consistently applying the stability/versatility
concept to the intellectual theory of recommendations for social progress,
while I am focusing more on the versatility and stability of the society
itself. I do agree that intellectual methodology is inherently
stable/versatile, but I am just establishing this as a fundamental
assumption. In other words, high quality progressive social and intellectual
patterns are both stable/versatile.
