Hi Erin!
ERIN:
I just want to say that I understand the fear of a cycle of victimology. But
there is a term "the fundamental attribution error' that refers to how we
underestimate situational factors and overestimate dispositional factors.
RISKY:
Yes, I would agree.
E:
I noticed in a previous post how you liked how Bush termed "the axis of evil"
but I think this "evil" is due to more situational factors then dispositional
factors. I know you don't want to treat terrorists as "victims".
but if we want to stop terrorism we need to focus on the conditions that lead
to terrorism rather then treating terrorists. You can empathisize with this
country without enabling terrorism.
R:
Bushes term is extremely MOQish. It is so unfashionable these days to call
immorality what it is. I think you will agree that over the past 7 months of
this thread I have definitely supported that we need to treat the fundamental
causes of terrorism/evil. Of course one extremely pertinent pattern of
values that will influence future terrorist acts is our response to current
and past terrorist acts.
E:
I think your fear of cycle of victimology is valid but I think that it is
wrong to think that good things happen to good people. If there is any
justice
it will be done by the people it will not just "happen".
I have no idea of how we can create a system in which victims are minimized
without creating a cycle of victimhood. I hope you and Wim can figure it out.
R:
I strongly agree that undue optimism and/or resignation are foolish. We need
to learn from the past to improve the future. Maybe we will figure something
out in the next 7 months or so... Certainly I will continue to learn.
Thanks,
Risky
