Dear Rod,
In reply to your somewhat irritated remarks of 10/3 23:20 +0000:
Sorry to have caused them (or should I say 'valued' them in MoQish? (-; ).
Nothing wrong with expressing your personal opinions. I hope you allow me to
express whether I see value in them in the context of the thread as it was
developing.
As for your not seeing what I am getting at: I honestly don't know were this
thread will lead (as long as it is not flooded with low-quality discussion
about lousy television shows), which is my equivalent of Roger's openness to
learn. I do know that I would value a bit more openness of some of you
Americans to the idea that the whole of mankind is indeed member of a global
society (apart from being hopelessly set up against each other in separate
societies), which implies the need for a global system of rights, duties and
responsibilities. Until I have some trust that I can get that point across
in a non-provocative way (and more specific than I am doing now), I prefer
to talk about society in general.
I didn't introduce the notion of 'leading nation'. I am highly suspicious of
anyone calling his nation 'leading' in a general sense.
Isn't 'defining codes of practice for mankind' what the intellectual level
is about if it is going to lead social patterns of values toward Dynamic
Quality? There are no rights and no paths to heaven safe the rights we grant
each other and the paths we cut in the jungle. Doing just that, granting
others rights and cutting paths in the social jungle, is exactly what gives
our lives Meaning. (I am just expressing a personal opinion of course.)
With friendly greetings,
Wim
