Rod, I agree with your experimental, tentative approach to progress and that
occasionally we must take a step or two backward.

I agree with this comment with the clarification that I reject any new age
connotations of the word "mystic." (I try to avoid using the term -- too
much baggage). The pre-intellectual experience of reality is DQ. It is pure
experience. It is reality. It is the experience from which we derive our
static patterns. When I say progress is grounded out in experience I am
partially refering to this very point.
I hope that this is the bridge to unite Wim and my views of progress.

PS -- Just to clarify, I am fine with people defining intellectual level any
way they want, but I define it as logical, deliberate interpretations of
reality as demonstrated best in math or science. Thinking is rooted in
biology; traditions and beliefs are rooted in society; logic and empirical
methodology are the roots of the intellect. Again, I don't think it is
worthwhile arguing these definitions, but it will help if we clarify our
terms if differing.
