I just wanted to butt in and respond to this.
1) If you wanted to argue that case that Curtis is the manipulator and all the
advertising is done out of concern for our welfare (hee hee) then you need to
explain to us what Curtis has to gain for manipulating us. Come and sell your
idea (try and refrain from the sex sells approach--keep it clean)
2)I think there are levels of being manipulated and awareness of being
manipulated. I think chilren, teens are the most manipulated. The parents who
go to outrageous lengths to get the "Tickle Me Elmo" for the manipulated kid
seem just as stupid and manipulated as the kid to me.
For example I knew as a teen that my desire for name brands and my "horror" of
my mother's lack of desire was partly due to advertising manipulation but not
at the same level as now (manipulation decreased at an alarming rate when I
had to buy it with MY money -or lack thereof)
PLATT: I'm not sure if you think we're all being manipulated or not, or
whether
we know it or not. If we know we're being manipulated, are we still
being manipulated?
Could it be that the TV program about how we're being manipulated is
manipulating us by appealing to our nonrational, emotional desires to
appear to be better informed, always concerned with the welfare of our
fellow men, and morally superior to greedy, profit-seeking capitalists?
I wonder. From what you told us about the producer, Adam Curtis, I
don't have great deal of confidence in his "objectivity." But I appreciate
your taking the trouble to fill in the details of his documentary.
