Hi Raymond (if you're still around!)

I wanted to make a brief response to this post. According to the Christian
mystical understanding (that is, the dominant understanding before
rationalism reared its ugly head within the church), doctrines (dogma) are
not primarily descriptions of reality in the same way that eg a scientific
theory is. Rather they can be described as 'instructions for living' - that
is they are primarily geared around establishing an orientation to life
which enables full human flourishing. As a full human life is not simply
about having a correct set of beliefs but also a 'happy' interaction with
our fellows, so too doctrines are geared around that reality, not simply
questions of physical truth.

Happy to pursue this further.

Sam
