Platt, DMB, John B, Roger etc.,
It's been very funny to watch you all " debating", and now I would like to
chip in.....
Platt, from my own point of view , and I'm sure this goes for others, any
attack in this forum on the US, should not be taken as a personal attack
upon yourself, we all should be free to condemn things which to us appear
wrong, there are lots of people in the world like the idea of America, the
brand that is, but does noy mean those same people dislike Americans as
individuals, you must be able to see this.
There's a very funny scene in "The Life of Brian", where they are discussing
"what have the Romans ever done for us",..... substitute America for Romans
and the Peoples front of Judea for the rest of the world, and you have an
idea of the ambiguity with which people attack the American ideal, but
conveniently for get all the great things America has given the world.
But, and this is the biggest but in the world,.... like Rome of old there
has been a flagrant disregard by successive US governments of populations
outside of the US. It is much easier for us outside of the USA to see this
on an almost daily basis.
Just so you can get an ideaq of what the rest of the world reads every day,
it might be worth checking out our newspapers, such as The Guardian,
Observer, Independent and The Times. In the same vain I do read the NY times
and USA today occasionally, and there are huge disparities in major events
in which the US is involved.
A thought has just occurred to me...There is a big problem here , you have
only two national dailies for 350 million people, where as in the UK we have
8 or 9 for 65 million people, we just get a hell of a lot more information
than you do.
On a personal note, I have never met an American I have not got on with, I
even studied in Chicago, and I love your attitude to life, but I truly
despise corporate America!!
There will, always be this distancing between individuals and their
governments/economies, but please don't take it personally.
I hope you don't take any personal offence at these remarks.
