Rod, PS to Rick,
That sounds like a sort of Marxist perspective you've got there. Kids go to
school and go to college not to fulfill their dreams, but because they
unconsciously want to reproduce the managerial economic system. Most jobs
that don't fit into this category are minor and therefore won't interfere
with the larger system (ie, novelist, musician). The way things are going,
with colleges requiring students to focus on specialization over
diversification, I think this system will last well into the next century.
I personally think there will be efforts to curb the human population within
the next 100 years. Maybe that would help with the person-to-job ratio. As
long as people can believe they are happy with jobs that benefit society,
everything will continue as normal.
