Hi John and Wim,

WIM: I do see a lot of value in 'letting the situation dictate', 'attending to
what is' and 'immediacy', but I don't see how it is a better basis for the
issues I was discussing. For me it translates simply as 'openness to DQ',
which is only half of what we need.

ERIN: I was wondering if you could expand on 'letting the situation dictate'.
I was glad Wim wrote on that. I had mixed feelings about it.
WHY I DIDN'T LIKE IT:
When I first read it the expression itself seemed like it could be interpreted
as a return to the biological level. A large part of development has to due
with development of inhibitory processes and the development of a reflective
nature. We can hold off an immediate reward for a greater one in the future.
I think that too much inhibition reminds me of Victorianism but "letting the
situation dictate" reminds me of a hippie regression to the biological level.

WHY I DID LIKE IT: When they look at a comparison of collectivistic vs
individualistic societies. They found that conformity is higher in
collectivisitic socities but they were less likely to underestimate the
influence of the environment on behavior. In America there is a rugged
individualism notion that really underestimates how much the situation (vs
your disposition) affects your behavior. I think if we improved this there
would be more emphasis on improving the environment then on reform ( although
practically I know we have to hold people responsible for their behavior
regardless whether it was more due to their environment).

OVERALL: I think "openness to DQ" works better for me because it is less
passive/reactive and sounds more voluntary to how you respond to your
environment. Unless you could help distinguish how 'letting the situation
dictate" from a biological level differs from "letting the situation dictate"
on an intellectual level.

Zen k'you very much,

Erin
