with respect john i think you are wrong.

chomsky's 'syntactic structures' is, i believe, still regarded as a landmark
text in linguistic science and philosophy. however over the last twenty
years+ chomsky has turned his attentions outward and has produced
comprehensive and accurate (otherwise he would never get out of court and
they would never see the light of day) critiques of the american media and
foreign policy.
'manufacturing consent'is quite simply essential reading/viewing if one is
to understand the hegemonic role of the media in US and western affairs.
'deterring democracy' is likewise invaluable if an understanding of the
global power balance is sought. his 20 or so books also cover the history of
US imperialism and the history of israel, palestine and US relations. his
great strength and weakness is his academic bent. he is scrupulously
thorough and accurate (most effectively in his quoting of official
documents), but this (necessary) attention to detail can make his works a
little difficult.

i suggest you reread the chomsky article i posted. there is a reason why the
US (alone) vetos every UN resolution on israel/palestine. there is a reason
why the official policy of the US since kissinger has been to perpetuate
'stalemate' on this question. there is a reason why israel receives billions
of US dollars in 'aid'.

chomsky's work is one of scholarship; he is hardly emotive or prone to
hyperbole. again this is his strength and weakness. john pilger, the famous
australian journalist, is a more emotive writer on similar issues leaving
his (still highly regarded) work more open to charges of bias.

all the best
gav
