Hi Erin,

I'll take you up on this.

Life is a cruel joke, as it were. If you read my
previous post, the tragedy is before our eyes but we
willfully refuse to see it. It is this revelation that
is always at hand, that is the irony. It is always the
difference from "our other" that is our consciousness.
We can never be the other nor ourselves but we can be
different from the other or ourselves. You see, we
live in the trace of our being. This is all basic
Heidegger and Derrida. Or even Nietzsche: think of 2
mirrors facing each other and your reflection in it:
what do you see? An eternal recurrence of your image.
An eternal return. That very eternal return of your
being through the difference of your self and the
other is you.

Certainty for Wittgenstein is a main issue. See his
book "On Certainty" which he wrote right before he
died. Essentially, certainty is the source of our
freedom. In other words, there is a joyousness to our
inability to be certain, for in uncertainty, our
freedom is contained. By my choice of being certain, I
give belief and can create certainty in my life. Your
teacher was right I think but as I said before,
postmodernism is misinterpreted easily, and is the
surest sign of it's correctness in my view. Why would
anyone be angry at postmodernism if it is not but
truth? Look to see the object of anger and you will
find truth. With some of the objectors on this list,
I'd "look" at their replies and let that speak for
itself instead of "thinking" about their replies. Seek
to understand before seeking to be understood.

Angus
