To all,
I started this post when I got Wim's latest post. He expressed beautifully
what I was struggling with.
"As a matter of 'fact' reality consists of both individual and collective
morality. My MoQ doesn't point to only one of the two/"
--It seems silly to think of how much quality I have a "right"
to so does anybody have a suggestion for a better phrase?
We of course want to maximize quality and feel empathy for those experiencing
less quality in their lives but isn't quality something you create not demand.
--From an individual standpoint the main worry is that demands of other's
rights infringes on our personal rights. From the standpoint of a global
community *you* are as weak as your weakest member. In my opinion Sept 11
woke Americans up to that fact we are not alone. It seems we have to fear our
safety to realize that we are a global community.
I have problems distinguishing pity and empathy sometimes so I understand
Roger's concern of charity-handouts and Platt's annoyance at people asking for
his money. But Wim's ideas of individual and collective morality seems the
best route to getting at what Roger describes as a win-win situation.
I don't think embracing this is sacrificing the right of the intellect to
social rights either. Individual morality benefits you directly and collective
morality benefits you indirectly.
I think the more we embrace a global community the more the individual freedom
we will have.

P.S.
Just thought this was interesting.

Calculated annually, the Gross National Product (GNP) is the standard by which
countries gauge their prosperity. In an age when all other values are
subservient to the obsession with material wealth, the GNP is in essence a
measure of the current worth of the Holy Grail. In recent years the small
Buddhist nation of Bhutan has rebelled against this vulgarity, however,
proposing a different accounting system: Gross National Happiness. While it
takes into consideration economic development, it also includes factors like
the preservation of the environment, enrichment of the culture, and quality of
governance. I suggest you draw your inspiration from the Bhutanese in the
coming week and estimate your own Gross Personal Happiness. It's a perfect
time to evaluate and increase your levels of joy.
