Hi Erin, Ed.
I don't substantially disagree with most of what you say - do bear in mind
that the paper I appended to my remarks to Platt was both aimed at
(non-philosophically trained) 17 year olds, and also that they were largely
from strongly religious (Muslim) backgrounds. It wasn't the place to give a
full exposition of alternative systems, I was really just trying to make
them think.
However, Ed writes "Treating mental illness in a religious context can be
dangerous because you are basing it on static moral codes that have basis in
humanity's strugle with the mystic." Whether religion is equivalent to
'static moral codes' is a moot point, and is something that Wim and I have
been discussing, on and off, for much of the last few months. Look in the
archives for our "static and dynamic aspects of religious belief" thread if
you want to join in. (I can't at this moment recall whether I'm overdue to
make a response to Wim on it; perhaps when he gets back from his holiday he
could remind me!).
