This is an excellent analysis. This is why the MOQ will eventually replace
the metaphysics of substance, SOM, as the dominant intellectual pattern.
The MOQ asserts intellect's moral right to be free from repression by social
forces, while simultaneously asserting the moral right of social patterns to
be free from repression by biological patterns. The war between intellect
and society, between Science and Religion, which has all but killed society
and given rise to an unprecedented rise in crime, drug abuse, terrorism, and
biological degeneracy of all kinds, will be alleviated. By also asserting
the moral right of Dynamic Quality to be free from repression by lower level
intellectual patterns, it brings spirituality and art back to their proper
place.

Whew! thanks. I was begining to think my original post was completely
misunderstood. But it easy to see that you get it. I'd add that Pirsig
points to this same problem when he talks about the social level getting
caught in the crossfire. When SOM or scientific objectivity takes the side
of biology against social values the results are deadly. This is what
happens when the intellectual level is blind to social quality. Stamping out
stupid traditions and irrational superstitions is one thing, but tossing out
tens of thousands of years of cultural evolution for the sake of mere
rationality is quite another. And since the MOQ's "fix" is a new idea, there
are lots of issues left to be sorted out on this matter.
Was it Rousseau, an enlightenment figure if ever there was one, who said
that "man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains"? Pirsig corrects
this notion too. He points out that without society man is not free. He is
repressed by biological necessity with its' law of the jungle. Compared to
living on your own in wild nature, society is quite liberating. And he asks
us now not to follow social values blindly, but to go back and re-ask how
the intellectual level is connected to and dependent on the social level.
Not too simple, but I suspect its well worth sorting it all out. Not only to
fully grasp the MOQ, but for pragmatic reasons. People are being damaged and
killed by this failure of the enlightenment. Flatlanders are in pain.
Thanks again,
DMB
