Roger said to Elliot:
Just to clarify though, are you suggesting that the world would be better
off
today if people stopped producing things for each other or servicing each
other and instead started... meditating... or reading Chaucer all day?

DMB says:
Hmmm. Meditating and reading are not quite as ridiculous as you make them
sound. The problem with the traditional economic debates is that both
Marxism and Capitalism view man primarily as an economic creature. They're
just rival forms of materialism. They're both steeped in SOM. It is a
flatlanders debate that belittles and/or ignores the deeper dimensions of
what it means to be human. Wealth should serve human interests, not define
them. The economy should serve humanity, not the other way around. Squirrels
gather nuts. Big deal. I'm not saying material wealth is irrelevant or
entirely unimportant, but its not at the top of the list either.
