Dear Erin,

'We CAN experience the unconsciousness ... from the outside.'
It depends on your perspective. The human ability to be self-conscious
implies an ability to know our consciousness both from within and from
without. We can study our own consciousness 'from without'
- either by 'splitting up' and letting one part of our consciousness study
the rest 'as if it were outside of us'
- or by studying someone else (or ourselves 'as if we were someone else'),
inferring from his/her behavior and communication what's 'inside' his/her
consciousness and drawing conclusions from that about our own consciousness.
We can study our subconsciousness (that's indeed what we're talking about,
Jim, even when we call it unconsciousness, which HAS -according to my
dictionary- both meanings) only from without and only by inferring from
behavior and communication. Trying to study subconsciousness from within is
comparable to trying to study darkness by aiming a flashlight at it.
If we study both consciousness and subconsciousness from without, I agree
that consciousness can be seen as being a part of subconsciousness and in
that sense 'within subconsciousness'.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
