Ah, so. From Hakuin's Zazen Wasan:
"All beings are from the very beginning Buddhas:
It is like ice and water,
Apart from water, no ice can exist;
Outside living beings, where do we find Buddhas?
Not knowing how near Truth is,
People seek it far away--what a pity!
They are like him who, in the midst of water,
Cries in thirst so imploringly."
And from the illustrious Huang Po:
"You have always been one with the Buddha, so do not pretend you can
attain this oneness by various practices."
Or as this Zenrin poem so neatly sums it up:
"If you understand, things are just as they are.
If you do not understand, things are just as they are."
