Hi Squonk,
> Is it a good for US science classes to teach literal biblical accounts of Genesis?
With the greatest respect for all religions, I think it would be good to teach Genesis as an example of what science is not.
As I have said, more than one Catholic priest told me that the Genesis is an allegoric tale. It would be like, for a geography class, to teach the Odyssey as a detailed map of the Mediterranean Sea.
> Does Intelligent design offer a more acceptable account?
Intelligent design and teleological explanations of evolution are theories. I guess a honest science teacher should explain both Darwinism and the possible alternatives, offering all the scientific proofs available and all the holes still existing.
No theory should be taught as dogma. It is important to show that Darwinism is not the only theory ever conceived. Even if it's nowadays the best theory, young generations should know that even Darwinism could be replaced, sooner or later, by something better.
(for example, what about "humans evolved from George W. Bush ?" :-) )
Ciao,
Marco
