Hi John B, Wim, Scott, Platt, Erin, and all,
John, your thread of Value and Time, which this reply is referring back to,
is great stuff. The ideas within it make my soul sing.
The Wittgenstein quote was great. Life without meaning is meaningless.
I, and Judaism would add to the Holy Trinity of The Good, The True and The
Beautiful. The Hebrew word is Tzedaqah, which is Jews usually translate as
"Righteousness". This is conveying a sense of Rightness, Right-action,
Justice, fairness. It is not to be confused with "self-righteousness", a
belief in one being better than some other because of some perceived
holiness that the believer has and the disbeliever lacks. The word Tzedaqah
is colloquially used as the word for "Charity". The idea being that to
have possessions, wealth is ultimately a gift from the Divine and not only
something you create from your own efforts and actions. Hence your attitude
toward your wealth should be as a caretaker. A temporary holder. To honor
the ultimate source of wealth you give some of it to those who are in need.
This is rightness, right action, this is justice, this is fairness, this is
the meaning of Tzedaqah.
So, the Holy trinity should be a fourfold holiness: The Good, the True, The
Beautiful and the Rightness.
I agree that mystical practices leads toward 'immediacy of experience' and
hence a cleaving with the Divine/Quality. I just am wary of what we take
back from this experience. I know any proclamation of "My way is the only
way." Is an outright falsehood. That is my only certainty that I believe
in. [All of this I raised in my posts to Scott on the Value and Time
thread.]
John, keep on posting!
Gary
