Hi John,
My post wasn't actually my 'extended treatise' - I had hoped that the use of
Pirsig's arguments would be a short cut that would avoid my having to write
it - but I think I'm just going to have to set out my thinking properly. I
think we do have significantly different views about what mysticism is, but
the differences aren't quite where I thought they were, so I think it would
still be worthwhile going further into this topic; if not because I think
we'll end up agreeing than because the process of examination will, if
nothing else, help me to clarify my own thinking on the topic. Also,
although we don't agree on this, I think a clearer understanding of where we
are each coming from will lead naturally into a critique of what Pirsig can
and cannot do with the MoQ, and I suspect we would agree on that.
So I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to wait just a little bit longer for a
full response. Thanks for your reply, though, it provides the perfect 'hook'
on which I can explain my position - which will then, hopefully, be a good
hook for you to do likewise.
Sam
