It was in the context of an essay about religion (the essay was "Religion
as Conversation-stopper"; I'm usually good about listing the origin of
quotes, so I apologize), however, in this context, Rorty doesn't make a
distinction between personal paths towards perfection, be it religion,
metaphysics, narratives, or nihilism. I added the bracketed info to
indicate this. Rorty follows the American tradition of the practical
seperation of church and state and extends it to include these other
private activities.
