Hi Roger and LS:
Since you've brought up quantum cosmology, let me take
another stab at winning your coveted "Purpose of the
Universe" award by making a direct appeal to quantum
weirdness.
According to quantum physics, nothing exists or occurs
independent of an observer. As Erwin Schroedinger put it,
"The external world and consciousness are one and the same
thing."
Since observers are required for their to be a universe, and
since observers exhibit purpose, the universe must be
purposeful.
Does that logic convince you? I doubt it. The problem which
I'm sure you recognize is that we're attempting to define
the universe using language that is part of the universe
we're trying to define. Can't be done. All logic leads to
that inevitable dead end. Godel's Theorem reigns. Or, as
Pirsig says in Chap. 5 of LILA, reflecting the mystic's
view, "Thought is not a path to reality."
Well, having tried to win your prize I have now talked
myself out it. The problem is S/O thinking. (Is there any
other kind?) To say "We can't define the infinite
indefinite" is to define the infinite indefinite by
declaring it indefinable. No wonder people stay away from
philosophic arguments by the droves.
At least we on the LS recognize our discussions for what
they are. But, like Pirsig, we bow to that part of us that
keeps saying, "Ahh, do it anyway. It's interesting. Getting
drunk and picking up bar-ladies and writing metaphysics is a
part of life."
Hear, hear to that. And to your fine contributions to the
LS.
Best,
Platt
