hello everyone!

finally i've read an email that i can answer...i really liked your
description of dynamic quality. it seems to me that using the example of the
lantern festival comes as close to the essence of something which by
definition is very hard to grasp. it is as fluid as water...ever
shifting...every changing...that to me is dynamic quality. and i believe
that is why Pirsig set Lila in a river which is running water symbolizing
the dynamism in motion. what happens to water when it stops flowing? it
stagnates...it stops supporting life...it dies.

Waves in water are water too!

my comment:

i like to sit and watch the river flowing by on a sunny morning. the river
never ceases to amaze me in its capacity to keep flowing past me rippling
and swirling in similar but endlessly different patterns of waves that are
not really the water, but a manifestation of water's Dynamic Quality
interacting with its environment. the tree i lean against is an old friend,
always happy to see me. winter is coming and the tree is getting ready to
sleep thru the cold by shedding its leaves.

i listen to the leaves rustling overhead in the autumn breeze and the breeze
is not the leaves. but to describe the breeze further than naming it air
movements or gusts thru the leaves seems to be impossible. brown and yellow
leaves, withered now, fall around me and float down the eddies and currents
of the river to some place i cannot see around the bend. what can we call
the breeze but a breeze?

i guess i cant really say what a wave is either, other than it is a wave,
because as soon as i focus on one, its gone, and another comes along for
just an instant, then it too is gone, and so on and on and on it goes... the
water is always the same...but the manifestation of what causes the water
continually pushes the it into ever changing forms that flow past me
ceaselessly.

a million insects and birds swarm over the early morning river and they too
seem to flow with some unseen waves thru the air. they seem to sense the
coming winter and the warmth of the early morning sun has drawn them all
forth on individual errands. fish jump, leaving sparkling ripples flowing
downstream.

what is Dynamic Quality? come sit on the riverbank beside me and if you sit
long enough, perhaps you will see for yourself!

best wishes,

glove
