i agree with your thoughts, but passion may not be quite right. When you talk
to the "artist" of writing, art creation, or such they often mention the fact
that the art forces its way out, that if they didn't get it out it would kill
them/drive them insane. Sound familiar? When you're fighting for your
survival, whether mentally or physically, every facet of your being can get
extremely focused - fixated - on your adversary.
     I don't want to be just critical, especially since this is my first post,
but on reading Pirsig's own comments (the article on his conversations and
letters) on why he uses DQ as a term so that SOM people can't deny it's
existence seems so much more important.
     At the same time it's relevance to you is almost the most important thing
- an expression of the DQ in you.
