<< I have read stories and seen movies of meditating monks who can react in a
split second even if an adversary comes from behind, and wondered how they did
it. now i know. In zazen one reaches a point of focused attention in which
one is connected to everything around them....the slightest sound, movement,
or smell is detected because its part of you. one can follow the sound waves,
or the movement, or the smell to where it ends and find oneself there. >>
This may be true in the sense of a high quality version of static social-
biological interaction. But the more complex intellectual-social interaction
that i was directly mentioning depends so much more on the culture in which
the creative person lives.
Unfortunately it seems to come from a dissatisfaction or a disassociation
other problem that individuals have that goes directly against the aims of
static society (which generally seems to be keep the status quo) to create
something new.
In your example (which I still say is a very good correlative anecdote to
staying in DQ) is the traditional zen ability to perfect ritual and form to
make perfection and creativity one. But I would still say that it is a
perfect Social Quality; a perfection of a social system to overcome the
biological and inorganic static qualities of life. It shows the continuing
development of Social Static and I believe is inadequate to relate to present
problems.
