I hope this won't be seen as an intrusion on the ongoing discussion of
morality and the Metaphysics of Quality. I am asking for your help in
constructing topics that my students might use to apply the principles of
the MoQ.

I'm teaching a Freshman Seminar at Dickinson College entitled "Zen and the
Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." I first taught it in 1990 and 1991, prior
to LILA; I have incorporated LILA into the course in 1995 and now again in
1998. Until a few weeks ago, I had no idea that the MoQ Forum, the LILA
Squad, etc. existed; you can imagine my amazement and excitement to
discovery the Web site and e-mail discussion forum.

We began the course by reading ZEN AND THE ART OF ARCHERY and some other
Zen things (Thich Nhat Hanh, et. al.), moved onto ZAMM, then discussed the
TAO TE CHING and FLOW:THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ENGAGEMENT WITH EVERYDAY LIFE
before moving on to LILA, which we are just a few days into.

The paper assignment I had conceived before was that each student would
select a topic involving a current moral problem of some sort and use the
MoQ as a means to analyze it. Students would identify the competing
static value-patterns that were involved and try to identify the Dynamic
Quality principle that is moving us in a certain direction. Certain
topics such as abortion, euthanasia, vegetarianism, and war come to mind,
but I suspect I am thinking in too limited a way about the possibilities
and I would like to give my students a broader range.

I would be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks much. Please continue
with your fascinating discussions and perhaps someday soon I'll be able to
contribute also.
