Hello,

In studying Pirsig's books some questions have been bothering me that I
would like to discuss to hopefully find some answers.
For one, I was concerned about finding out which would be more moral in a
same value level. For instance, eating could be said to be a biological
function of quality, and sex could also be said to be a biological
function. However, which is more moral. Eating would seem to be the
obvious answer since it is necessary to sustain life, but what about more
complicated issues. Like a social form of government, or a soical form of
religion. (I don't like to say gov. vs. religion for it sounds like old
subject-object talk). Now the government's ideas would be intellectual,
but I believe there is also a social form of government. Anyway do we have
a way of knowing which is more moral?

Another concern of mine is does a western idea of God have any place within
the metaphysics of quality. Some people have told me that my idea of
quality is the same thing as God. However, I don't agree. I think that
the idea of quality is a representative of the reality of the universe.
Much like the Japanese concept of Zen. Religion can probably be called
social-except for theological ideas, but where would that put a western
omnipotent God? Above quality itself?

Anyway if anyone has any ideas please write back.

Thanks,

Jason Nelson

Jason and squad,
I think you have raised a very interesting point here. It is easy to sort
out the morality of questions between the levels but I don't remember
anyone talking about the Quality questions that occur within a level. I
think this would be a very good topic for the squad.
The new moderated list started on the 3rd of Feb and everybody is over
there now. It is at lilasquad@moq.org. The topic for this month is
'cloning'. It is getting everybody bent out of shape. Check back in Diana's
and Horse's postings to see how to apply for the moderated list. This list
is still open for an unmoderated list-that is-free ranging and open for any
subject. Ken
