My interpretation of Pirsig's passage is that it is only moral for a
society to execute a criminal if the crimanal somehow threatens the whole
of society. Pirsig talks about treason being such a crime. However, he
also notes that executing a person destroys the higher level, Intellectual
patterns that their body supports. I agree that if a criminal, somehow,
threatens the survival of the entire society, Capital punishment is quite
justified by the MoQ. However, whether or not such a threat can actually
be made by one individual is up for grabs.
What do you think?
