David T said, "Mysticism is a component of most religions and Pirsig
clearly states that religions are on the social level" Oh, c'mon!
Pirsig repeatedly makes a distinction between the two. That's why the
Bishop gets so nervous when a Saint walks into the church. That's why we
have to look past all the "low-grade yelping about God" and look to the
utterances of mystics instead. Pirsig doesn't put mysticism on any
static level, he puts it on the dynamic level above the intellect. DQ
leads the intellect toward greater evolution, whereas religion is
usually the home of tradition and basic cultural values. DQ is
revolutionary as in the case of the Zuni Shaman, whereas religion is
often repressive and reactionary. And most importantly, our culture's
inability to accomodate mysticism is the fault of our culture, not
mysticism.
