There was a recent post inquiring if Pirsig knew Hayek at the University
of Chicago. This I don't know, but Friedrich von Hayek was an "Austrian
School" economist, as was his mentor, Ludwig von Mises, one of the main
founders of the school.
This school is the most ignored of all economic schools. What's most
interesting about it is that it believes economics is based on peoples'
values, as expressed in their behavior. (Mises' magnum opus is the
900-page "Human Action.")
As a result of his belief in values (and also because he didn't believe
math and physics [inorganic level] could be pasted on top of economics
[societal level]) , Mises found it almost impossible to find a job when
he emigrated to the U.S. from Germany after WWII. Even today there are
maybe three universities that teach Austrian economics.
The parallels with Pirsig's treatment academia are uncanny.
