I'm not sure "abstraction" is the right word to use in all cases. The
implication is that an "abstraction" is less real than what it is
abstracted from. The abstracted world is a "virtual" world - not real.
Interesting that a word like viRTual has come to mean "not real".

That's the most interesting question of all. Science has tended to
place "matter" as the ultimate reality, which flies directly in the face
of Eastern philosophy which regards matter as an illusion (Maya). I
believe that Pirsig takes the position that it is the apparent
contradiction between these two opposites that is the true illusion.
That's why he endorse neither mysticism nor logical positivism.
