On the whole I agree with you. The Hiroshima bombing was
completely unnecessary and, as you say, was mainly a warning to
the Russians. The bomb could quite easily have been dropped off the
mainland, as was discussed by the allied powers. And why were two
bombs dropped in quick succession? Again there was no need
except for revenge. Similarly, Dresden was a revenge bombing and
also quite unnecessary.

I just do not see where we are going to get by playing "what-if" games,
which is why I specified that it is meaningless to speculate on "what if"
this or that happened instead of what actually happened. The bombs were
dropped. We can speculate from now till the cows come home about the
different possible scenarios that might have played out but aren't we just
spinning our wheels?
I can understand being morally outraged at the wholesale destruction of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but like I said, I am not looking at who was right
or who was wrong in making such a decision. Rather I think we should look at
the Dynamics of such a decision to form a better understanding of how such a
thing happened. If one feels compassion for those who died there then they
should pray for them, not cast blame. Of course someone will probably scold
me for stating that "stupidity" too... oh well, I guess we can't all be
Einsteins. :)
Best wishes,
