Ken,
Great to hear from you. I think it would benefit newcomers to learn
more about your reasons for being concerned when we follow a
narrow, human-centered interpretation of Pirsig’s work. I know you
probably get tired of repeating yourself, but there are new people
joining the group all the time who don’t read old posts in the
archives. IMHO, your unique perspective really should be repeated
from time to time. It’s too important to languish on a dusty shelf.
You know the old saying, “ Out of sight, out of mind.”
As for your suggestion to change from “. . . plus a creative force
called to Dynamic Quality” to “. . . driven by a creative force called
Quality,” I confess to not seeing much of a difference but have no
objection to your change. As you know, Pirsig’s highest
abstraction is “Quality” which he splits into static and Dynamic. To
my mind, patterns of value come under the static side of the split
while values yet to be structured are Dynamic. If I were to make
any change in the original statement I would add the word “moral”
to “creative force” to emphasize the key component to Pirsig’s
metaphysics that sets it apart from all others.
Please, let’s hear more from you.
Platt
Original statement:
Still, I stand by my assertion that Pirsig is the only philosopher to
write a metaphysics based on the initial assumption that the world
consists solely of patterns of moral values plus a creative force
called Dynamic Quality, and that from that initial assumption he
has given us a view of reality unlike any other ever presented.
