ROGER PROVIDES BRIEF INPUT ON A COMMON THEME
FROM UNRELATED QUOTES BY DLT AND DENIS

Hey gang, it has been a while.

Following are two related comments from unrelated posts on the nature of DQ
and sq by two of my favorite writers, Denis and David T.

DENIS:
The DQ/SQ division is more something of a moral imperative than a useful
categorization tool : if it's DQ, you shouldn't be able to categorize
it, and if you can, then you've just transformed it into SQ.

DLT:
....First of all, static is not
static, its stable, discernible, knowable, patterns following "in the wake
of... an ongoing stream of quality events"

I've recently entertain the thought that the "original" split into dynamic and
static is unnecessary. More to match up with the subject object split than
anything else. The system would work just as well with dynamic as a quality of
the event as opposed the half of a bipolar split which containing just one
item, undefined DQ.

Quality>>>>>>> Stream of Q-Events>>>>>>>Static Patterns of Quality
                    Dynamic Quality

ROGER:
Actually, as best I understand David, I think that the way he suggests we
look at the Dynamic/static split is completely consistent with Pirsig's MOQ.
Experience or "events" are DQ. And as Denis explains, DQ categorized (or
experience categorized) is sq. The MOQ does not define reality as
fundamentally consisting of two types of events. The DQ and sq split are two
sides of one event.

I agree with both the above quotes, and only take exception to David's
doubting whether Pirsig concurs with his thoughts. I can site numerous
references that Pirsig does. Please straighten me out if I am
misunderstanding you David.

As to Denis' comment on whether the DQ/sq split is "a useful categorization
tool", it seems to me that the benefit of separating fundamental reality from
our models of reality is an essential first step to eliminate future
confusion. The MOQ is an intellectual model that is direct in admitting the
limitations of intellectual models. It sets the ground rules that the reality
discussed and sliced and sorted is static quality, not DQ.

And that works for me. Back to lurker mode.........
