As to your query about the "Guidebook"...
I would certainly suggest it to anyone with an interest in Pirsig's
ideas.
I'm lucky enough to live near Regis University, where the authors teach.
It's a very good school. I met Ron DiSanto and he graciously allowed my
little local book discussion group to quiz him about the "Guidebook". It
does a pretty good job of sketching out the major philosophical debates
throughout Western history, sort of clarifying and expanding on the
trail of ideas Pirsig follows in ZAAM. I still use it as an encylopedia
of sorts. It'll give you lotsa bang for your book bucks.
