i forgot whose post it was, but someone mentioned that humans dont wake up
excited about the prospects of being fed or clothed. that is a terribly
ethnocentric statement to make---more than 20% of the world's population live
below the poverty line; that is, they don't have what is needed to satisfy
basic human needs for survival. That says nothing about those who live right
at the poverty line. You dont think the idea of being fed and clothed
excites these people to an extent unimaginable to you and i? to express your
feelings and thoughts in a manner that says they are universally true is, to
me, one of the worst things a person can do. there is a lot of talk about
bad quality here. it seems to me bad quality can come as a result of
misrepresenting or discounting the quality that gives rise to the existence
of others. the quality with which a significant portion of our population is
surrounded by makes it so basic needs are the focal point of life. to
discount that is to misrepresent quality. that cant be good. if you claim
to be looking at just the U.S. landscape, then you are no longer talking
about quality. it goes without saying quality is global in nature and,
therefore, when speaking about it, global realities should be considered.
abraham maslow spoke about a hierachy of needs in that the steps towards
self-actualization (realizing as best we can our true quality) can only be
taken once lower requirements are satisfied. because of capitalistic
successes in this country, seemingly everyone reading this is able to move
past fulfilling basic needs and work towards self actualization. just
because that is the case for us, in no way entails it is the case for others,
as one particular post suggested. perhaps tones of appreciation and
gratifacation would be more appropriate, for surely those sorts of feelings
have better quality than those reflecting spoiled disenchantment.
