Erin:
oooh I just saw some clips of it on Oprah.
It looks really good.
One funny part was this bank giving out guns for
opening accounts!!
A lot of it was about the fear in America (Brezny's pronoia is needed
more
then ever!!)
Kevin:
Living in LA is short on benefits, IMO, but one of them is first dibs on
movies.
I caught Bowling For Columbine opening weekend and I'd be happy to share
my opinion.
It's worth seeing, to be sure. Michael Moore is not known for his
journalistic integrity or unbiased fact-finding, but rather for his
savage satirical wit.
If you like his previous work, you'll like BFC enough. It's funny, it's
distrubing, and it's not quite as preachy as some of his other stuff. In
fact, perhaps the largest criticism is that Mike doesn't really succeed
in finding a solution or even isolating the problem that he sets out to
explore. The end result is something that seems more personally
conflicted than illuminating.
It starts out about guns and the NRA, then it starts to question
violence, and ends up exploring the so-called Fear Culture in America
that seems to be somehow at the root of our gun-nutness.
BFC is very short on answers, but certainly asks a lot of good questions
about ourselves and our culture. And if you consider Charlton Heston a
total nut, you'll love watching him make a complete ass of himself when
Mike does his usual torpedo interview. No it's not a fair fight, but
then again I'm not sure Chuck Heston derserves a fair fight.
As a long time Michael Moore fan (more as a comedian or satirist than as
a genuine political activist) I'm also glad that this film shows less of
Moore's recent Cult of Personality fixation. Mike's a pretty shameless
self-promoter and some scenes don't hide it. But on the whole, this film
feels more genuine than some of his recent stuff. I was glad to see
that.
