Dear Platt,
Your quote (6 Dec 2002 11:05:32 -0500) from Aziz Nasafi certainly expresses
the same 'something beyond comprehension' that inspires me ("Divine One
through Many" as you summarize it). You really recognize it 'as a basic
premise in [my] approach to the MoQ'? I'm glad to hear that. I'm not that
confident that I'm often enough able to express it in what I do and write.
I agree that our differences are less important. (Even if they are tsunami's
rather than ripples, they are still negligible on an ocean.)
'The day Socrates tried to establish the independence of intellectual
patterns from their social origins' is only one of several 'historical
changes in the social climate' Pirsig mentions in chapter 22 that are
comparable to the 'change from preposterous social restraint of all
intellect to a relative abandonment of all social patterns ... of the
twentieth century'. He doesn't state that this is when the intellectual
level arose.
Your quote from chapter 24:
'What had happened since the end of World War I was that the intellectual
level had entered the picture and had taken over everything.'
doesn't refer (with 'entering the picture') to the intellectual level
becoming a separate level. Pirsig continues (two sentences later) with:
'suddenly everything was upended by this new intellectual supremacy'. So
'entering the picture' only refers to 'new intellectual supremacy' and (back
to this) 'change from preposterous social restraint of all intellect to a
relative abandonment of all social patterns ... of the twentieth century'.
You wrote:
'the crab is also possessed by Quality and has direct experience of value'.
For me 'being possessed by Quality' refers to MoQ thinking and 'having
experience of value' refers to SOM thinking. The value 'I' (or the crab)
experiences is not the same Quality that creates 'me' or the crab.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
