    That's what I thought, but I wanted to check.

    When I wrote 'Thanks for taking a shot at "linear causality"', "linear
    causality" happened to be a quote of something I said, but I quoted
    it not because I felt a need to quote myself, I quoted it because I
    wanted to stress the two words together, as the object of discourse.
    The phrase was coined by me but the words came from your description.
    This is not a misuse of quotes; it comes up often during philosophical discourse and literary analysis. You will have to trust me on this, but
    the upshot is that you are mistaken that it is a scare quote or a sneer
    quote. I don't blame you for making the mistake. However, you could be
    just as mistaken by Pirsig's "possession by the Devil" quote. You think
    the meaning of the quotes is obvious but I think their meaning is
    ambiguous.

    I made Pirsig sound silly when I said a conclusion of the MOQ is
    that the devil walks the earth in human form. It's an open question
    in my mind whether Pirsig believes in the devil in some sense.
