    Happy New Year John,

    Mari:
Matt had some thoughts on the "Classic/Romantic" split.
He said: I hesitate to call it a classic/romantic split
because I think its a lot more complicated then that. The classic/romantic
split also implies that one way of reading is "deep" and the other surface
orientated. I think that's the wrong way to contextualize the differences.
I think the difference depends on people's different life experiences and,
in particular, what kinds of books they have read.

Mari: i'm going to re-read the "C/R" part of ZMM today. In the mean time i
want to ask you this: you said: "I am
    > definitely here because of how the book made me feel"
Mari asks: What is the feeling? When you say you've done "no reading" how is
it that you go from "no reading" to ZMM? And what exactly is "fuzzy".? Do
you think these are questions that will help you get to the meat of the
matter and might eventually lead to some clarity for YOU?
Like i said to David yesterday: i think that i've learned a lot about many
things since joining MoQdg and of course from reading Pirsig. There is a lot
of brain power here and some excellant writers; very eloquent indeed!
That said i get the impression that some questions are answered while never
getting answered. Some questions are only meant to be asked and not
answered; rhetorical, meant to ponder. Pirsig while defining some things
claims that that which he is defining is undefinable, and i buy it; it works
for me with-in a particular context. But not all things are like that. Some
things need simple tangible answers not cleaver, esoteric, intellectually
correct dissertation that takes one on an Alice in Wonderland trip where the
white knight is talking backwards and the red queen says: "off with his
head". Sometimes less is better IMHO. That is not meant to offend anyone and
i agree with you: "No problem with
    > that, if that's the only conversation then that's the one you'll have." i
can unsubscribe anytime, i know where the door is but i have an agenda. i'd
like to use the braintrust; put it to use towards a different end:
"practical use" if you will. Use it to evoke change in the world, make a
REAL difference. But first there needs to be a belief that that is possible,
an agreement and desire to work towards that end. So far i don't see very
    much agreement anywhere do you?
It's interesting that you used the term: " macho
    > pissing competition," because i wrote a post around Thanksgiving that i
never sent where i used the term "intellectual pissing contest". i wonder if
    anyone else had similar thoughts?

Mari: Well John, the lurkers need to come forth and the regulars need to see
the value of those who are less eloquent. Or not.

    All the best,
    Mari
