I'm far mre impressed by the ability to stay
focused on topic and address the issues clearly. These are the rules of a
purist. These are just among the minnimum requirements for clear and
effective communication. What revolutionary changes occured to demote the
basics? I mean, what "platypi" have emerged to cause us to abandon such
things as actually adressing the issues and staying on topic? By analogy,
such moves don't make one a revolutionary, just a very bad chess player.
There's no punting in chess.
Matt:
This is the essence of our disagreement. You see, you are begging the
question in your favor by demanding I "stay on topic" when what I'm saying
is "the topic you're discussing leads to a dead-end, let's try a different
tact." You paint me as not communicating, but I don't think that's the
case. A lot of people have caught on to what I'm saying. Even Platt seems
to have, though he's still on your side philosophically. I'm communicating
fine. The "platypi" that's emerged is a much larger topic that has to do
with Truth and Foundations and the correspondence theory of truth. I don't
see the point in rehashing this point with you, though, because its pretty
apparent you don't want entertain any questioning of it. Which is fine,
that's your perogative.
In fact, I don't even know what topic we're discussing. Because if we're
discussing "staying on topic" then as far as I can tell, we're staying on
topic. I think all I've been doing is redescribing your descriptions of
what I'm doing to play up the point that you're begging the question in
your favor. I'm also begging the question in my favor, but I've also lost
the dream of using universal criteria of figuring out when people are
"staying on topic." I own up to the fact that we are redescribing each
other's positions.
