Greetings Platt, Chuck and all,
Yes, some paintings are better than others. But, I'd like to paint with
the grace of Sargent, so actually none are successful. It's always
learning. It's always a different experience. It's always joy. Well, not
always, sometimes I become a grumpy painter.
I painted a wolf, a lone wolf. When I was finished, I looked and thought,
'Well, it's another self-portrait.'. For fun I did little paintings of
the faces (from sculptured wall hangings) representing the seven deadly
sins. What fun!!! I saw myself in each of those faces! It was a relief
to see myself more honestly.
I'm trying not to paint to photographic realism. I'm trying to see anew,
and not what I think I already know. It's hard to do. Mind wants to rely
on past experience. Maybe that's a form of static quality.
There are many things about painting I cannot find the words to
express. Sometimes an analogy comes close, like 'lost and found edges'.
