Scott,
Scott said:
So why not accept that both sides are necessary, that the ambiguity is an
inevitable aspect of the third path, that the third path can never quite be
"found" as it must always oscillate? I would not go so far as to say that
this was what Pirsig was purposely up to, but I do think it an interesting
misreading, at least.
Matt:
Granted, that is a possibility and I haven't ruled it out, but so far I
haven't found the enuciation of an "ironic metaphysics" (supposing we use
this name for the third path you're fleshing out) convincing. And I agree,
so far I wouldn't be convinced that this is what Pirsig's up to and this is
one more kind of (mis)reading. I certainly find the concept of an "ironic
metaphysics" more interesting then a straight absolutist reading, but then,
I'm still not convinced that it pulls itself out of the absolutist side and
onto a third path (or up out of the pragmatist side and onto a third path).
But still, a consideration.
So, I should've said earlier, "And, pace Scott, I haven't been convinced
yet that he's found a third path." My apologies, Scott.
Matt
