Hi Dustin, others,
First of all, I might say: welcome to the list Dustin, nice to jump in
on such a controversial but interesting issue! I've refrained a while
from this list, due to focussing my mind on other issues, but the topic
at hand here interests me also.

One should keep on questioning the validity of controversial issues.
Although there is some empirical research that seems to affirm the
effectiveness of "laying on of hands", there are a lot of people who
either firmly believe or firmly disbelieve in these apparent 'psi' or
'paranormal' phenomena. The problem is, the 'psi' vs. the 'rational'
worldviews seem to collide and seem inreconsilable (so you seem forced
to adopt only one or only the other), at least at the moment. But maybe
some truth is in the middle-ground.

Rupert Sheldrake? I believe he is trying to communicate at least with
animals via seemingly psychic ways.
Damn, I had a whole reference-list of critical research that actually
supports certain psi-phenomena, e.g. in established scientific journals
such as Physical review letters, brain and behavioral sciences, and
others. Can't find it now. But here's a reference on the net that might
interest you.

In particular, some experimental data on psi and 'anomalous'
interactions with biological systems:
