Sam and all MOQers:
Sam Norton quoted from "Theology Today":
At the cutting edge of time, before an object can be distinguished, there
must be a kind of nonintellectual awareness, which he called awareness of
Quality. You can't be aware that you've seen a tree until after you've seen
the tree, and between the instant of vision and the instant of awareness
there must be a time lag. . . Any intellectually conceived object is always
in the past and therefore unreal. Reality is always the moment of vision
before the intellectualization takes place. There is no other reality.
dmb replies:
Strange that this should come up in an article about reviving the trinity.
Anyway, I wanted to call your attention to a mistake. Notice how the author
explains it in terms of a pre-existing tree and pre-existing viewer of the
tree? He is talking about the pre-intellectual reality in terms of subjects
having a vision of objects before they are concieved as such. He's not quite
getting it and some how imagines that these trees and viewer are something
other than the intellectual concepts Pirsig is talking about. You may recall
from recent exhanges in the other forum, Pirsig points out that its not just
a matter of the eye preceeding the brain in registering that external
reality. That would not constitute a copernican revolution. No Pirsig is
saying that subjects, objects and sense organs ARE intellectual
interpretations and that none of those things are present in the primary,
pre-intellectual awareness.
There is a cultural bias that repeatedly causes this kind of
misinterpretation. I'm sure you're sick of the term "blindspot", but there
it is - again. I hope that my complaint might be easier to see this time
just because this error was not committed my you or your friends. You can't
take it personally or as a personal insult. I don't care who the author is
and have already forgotten his name. Please, tell me you see it?
